Adults: Strong Back Take to Finish
Warm-up
Hands to the Mat + Connected
Player A
Players work to get their opponents’ hands or hand to the mat. Once you get a hand to the mat, you work to connect your hands around their body or a leg. So, we’re looking to destabilize our partner and then connect to their body. If you connect your hands, keep them connected; it’s your partner’s objective to disconnect. Once your partner disconnects, then you continue.
Player B
Win Condition(s)
Sweep/Pass
Player A
Player A is on top, attempting to pass or take the back with hooks in. Player A, to finish the pass, needs to have their hands connected to their partner in order to win.
Player B
Player B is attempting to sweep or submit.
Win Condition(s)
If Player A passes or gets the back OR Player B sweeps or submits, then flip top and bottom.
Side Control Hold Down
Player A
Player A is just trying to stay connected chest-to-chest and control Player B. If you’re a blue or purple belt, you also have to get an underhook on the far side, while still maintaining chest-to-chest. If you’re a brown belt or higher, you have to transition to mount after getting a far side underhook.
Player B
For Player B, your job is simple. Get your feet back between you and your partner, so recover guard. Make sure you create frames, which enable you to recover.

Turtle Back Take
Look for the chest wrap with an S-grip. We don’t go seatbelt yet, until we have a hook. The seatbelt is a cross-body control, but we don’t have the cross-body yet. We’re going to use the chest wrap to lever them open. We want to control and open the space between the elbows and knees. We also want to get our chest-to-back connection. So, we’ll use this to build height. The chest wrap is also important, so we don’t get thrown off. If they try to throw us off, we’ll stop at their armpits.
Once we get our hook in, we’re going to switch to the seatbelt. From here, we need to take the back, using our elbow on the far side to pull them with us.
Before we do that, though, we’re going to hook over their knee with our backside leg. I’ve seen people hook at the ankle, but the problem with that is that I don’t have control over their knee. So, if we pull them back, he can hop his knee and immediately go back to the mat. If we trap over at the knee and connect our foot and our knee, as we pull back, there is no escape with the knee.
Finally, to finish, we’re going to lock our feet and pinch our knee on top of the hip. We don’t lock out feet below their butt, because they can start to rotate their hips. We lock on top of the hip and clamp down. We’re gonna pause here for now.
The Finish
To finish, we’re going to hit a mean cross-collar choke from the back. But we’re going to set it up first. We want to open up the neck. With our underhook side, on the top, we’re going to look to grab either the shoulder or the lapel to pin them down. We want to stop rotation.
With our arm that’s over top, we’re going to misdirect them. We’re going to do that by wrapping their face, like we’re going for an RNC, but we’re going to pull our elbow back to open up this side of the neck.
We’re going to use our underhook side to punch the top lapel against the neck and to our hand. From here, we’ll trace the neck with our thumb to pull the lapel inside.
To finish, our underhook side reaches across and grabs the bottom lapel to finish the cross collar choke from the back.
