Adults: Smashing Leg Entanglements
Warm-up
Upper/Lower
Player A
Player A is the upper. The upper is looking for double unders.
Player B
Player B is the lower. Player B is looking for hands connected around a leg and the leg off of the mat.
Win Condition(s)
If Player A gets double unders or Player B gets hands connected and leg lifted off of the mat, then upper/lower switches.
Feet Inside
Player A
Player A starts standing with Player B’s feet on the inside. Their objective is to get both feet on the outside and touch their shin anywhere from their hips to their shoulders.
Player B
Player B is lying on their back, both feet on the inside, and one grip on the foot. From here, their objective is to get Player A’s hips/butt/back to the touch the mat.
Win Condition(s)
If Player A touches their shin anywhere from the hips to the shoulders OR Player B gets Player A’s hips/butt/back to the mat, switch.
Main Class
Smashing Double Outside
When it comes to defending and escaping leg entanglements, there are three objectives I want you to always be thinking about. Those are: building height, pointing the heel into the ribs, and getting the foot flat on the mat. So, those are global things.
For each leg entanglement, we want to build height, because it decreases control. Pointing the heel at the ribs keeps us out of heelhook danger. Putting the foot flat on the mat also keeps us out of heelhook danger and straight ankle lock danger.
When it comes to escaping, we have some steps that we’ll be doing. Specifically:
- Fighting the hands.
- Splitting or compressing the knees.
- Getting to a knee or foot (building height).
- Stripping the legs.
- Covering the hips or connecting chest-to-chest.
Our first position we’re going to work from is double outside, but remember, the same principles apply.
Smashing the Saddle
Implementation Game
Player A
Player A is seated, with their leg wrapped up, trying to fight the hands, split the legs/knees, get the knee in alignment, and weight into the foot.
Player B
Player B has double outside and the foot wrapped. No attacks, but trying to hold onto the foot for as long as possible, with the leg wrapped.
Win Condition(s)
Reset when Player A either gets the leg out OR smashed through and into a dominant position.
