Single Leg Defense / Limp Leg

  1. Okay, so first and foremost, we’re stuck in a single leg. From here, we have to be active, and we have to prevent this situation from getting worse. So, our hands need to be involved.

  2. The major threats here are that our opponent gets higher up on our leg, our opponent circles around to the back, they switch to a double, or hit a bodylock/knee tap. So, we’re going to set ourselves up to defend those, first and foremost.

  3. With our hand on the same side as our leg, we’re looking for a thumb post on the base of the neck. This is going to help us push him away, to keep him from going higher on our leg. We’re also going to get our elbow pinched, so that he can’t circle an underhook and rotate around to our back.

  4. Our other hand is going to be floating, looking to attack/frame on his wrist and/or get a C-grip on his elbow.

  5. From here, we’re looking to limp leg. To do this, we have to get our knee above his hands. So, we use our wrist grip and our thumbpost to push him down, while we point our toes, like a ballerina, and bring our knee above the hands. Once our knee is above the hands, we turn and drive our knee out, leaving our thumbpost connected.

  6. We don’t want to remove the thumbpost, or they’ll have access to our back. Once our knee is out, we turn quickly and drop our thumbpost into a down block.

Single Leg Defense / Guillotine Sumi Gaeshi

  1. If we’re struggling getting our knee line out, we need to remember that their hands are preoccupied with our leg, meaning they aren’t defending their neck.

  2. But, we don’t want to just slap on a guillotine and act like that’s going to solve everything. It may make them let go, in which case we’ve escaped and have opportunities to counterattack now, but ultimately, we’re going to approach this like they’re devoted to the takedown.

  3. From the single leg, we’re going to get our same thumbpost and C-grip, so we start from the same position. From here, we’re going to use the thumbpost to push them slightly to the side, toward the center of our body, and then we’re going to change the thumbpost into a collar tie.
