Staging Positions (Control the Kneeline) - Outside
I’m going to be drilling these concepts into your heads, and then we’re going to work them into a framework, from where we can then begin to pass. We’re going to start from the concepts, but we’re going to apply them practically to show them in use. Sometimes concepts, without examples, can be difficult to grasp. So, the framework is this.
- Control and get past the feet. Those are our entries.
- Control the kneeline. This is our staging position. From here, we can back out to control the feet again, transition to other staging positions, or finish our pass to get to our end goal.
- Transition to upper-body control. This is our end goal.
- And finally, secure the position. So, controlling the position at our end goal.
Today, we’re going to be working on our staging positions. So, these are the positions where we are controlling the kneeline, and we’re past our opponent’s feet. Realistically, you can have two to three good entries and be very effective. With these staging positions, though, you really need multiple. If you can transition between them smoothly, that’s when you really begin to pass difficult guards. These are the positions where you can begin to chain pass. If your opponent is able to make space with their feet, then they can reset the position. So, these positions need to be solid.
Our staging positions take the same four conceptual forms as our entries. Those forms are:
- Outside of the knees.
- Under the knees.
- Compressing the knees.
- Splitting the knees.
We’re going to be working through these quickly and we’re going to work on transitions between them.

- From Shin-to-shin pin.
- To J-Point Camping Position.
