Head-to-Head Connections

Player A

Starting head-to-head, with no grips. Working to get the hands connected around the leg, pulling the foot up off the mat OR working to get hands connected around the body, behind the elbows.

Player B

Win Condition(s)

2

Kuzushi Game

Player A

Start in no gi DLR. Heel grip, foot hook, and the inside knee grip. Your objective is to off-balance your opponent and get their hip, butt, back, or hands to the mat. Note that’s “hands” and not “hand”.

Player B

Player B needs to stay standing. No knees. Standing for now. The objective is to control the feet, get past the legs, and control the upper body, getting the chest to the upper body.

Win Condition(s)

If Player A gets hip, butt, back, or hands to the mat, that’s a win, switch top and bottom. If Player B gets past the legs and gets control of the upper body, that’s a win, switch top and bottom.

3

Back Control

Player A

Player A is on the back. No submissions. Work on controlling the position for as long as possible. Stop rotation.

Player B

Player B is trying to escape. Keep in mind, we’re doing jiu-jitsu, so don’t do any stupid escapes. Always protect your neck.

Win Condition(s)

If Player B escapes, switch roles.

Main Class

1

No-Gi De la Riva

  1. You can enter DLR by using your inside hand to grip the knee. It’s like a shin-on-shin grip, but on the inside of the knee, instead of the outside. Slide in, inserting your hook and grabbing the heel. This is important: grab the heel, not the ankle. Our objective with DLR, gi or no gi, is to manipulate and control the knee. In the gi, we can also control their posture. In no gi, we don’t have upper body controls, so the manipulation of the knee is even more important.

  2. With our control, we want to rotate the knee inward to expose the back. To do this, we’re going to switch our heel grip to an underhook grip. We go nice and deep on our grip, connect our hands, and chop down on the leg with our hooking leg.

  3. From here, we maintain control of the foot, but grab it ankle deep now. We sit up and wrap our arms over their hips.

  4. From here, our outside leg hooks under their far leg, and we lift and elevate to rotate them. Then we switch our hands and move onto the back.
