De la Riva Off Balance

  1. We’re going to start from De la Riva. With De la Riva, there are kind of two styles—one where people are looking for berimbolos and one where they stay more square. I’m not one to get on my neck and invert, so we’re going to be working from a more square style today.

  2. To start, let’s talk about the DLR hook and our grips. Our hook on the outside should be strong, with our toes flexed up and around the inside of the leg. From here, we’re going to get a front pant grip on the pants with our same side hand. Our other hand is going to get a sleeve grip. We’ll be upgrading this later.

  3. From here, we’re going to use our other, non-hook leg to push his foot away. A super common response to this is that he steps over into headquarters.

  4. Once he’s in headquarters, we’re going to switch our grip from the sleeve to a same-side collar grip.

  5. Now, we’re going to look to off-balance our opponent and elevate. So, we’re going to stack our DLR hook under our now middle leg and pull our grips and our knees to the chest, pulling him off to the side. A lot like we were doing last Monday with our cross lat grip.

  6. From here, I’m going to go knee to chest, and I can pummel into SLX.

SLX Defense Response

  1. Okay, so from here, some people will try to pull their foot up and away, so that you can’t get SLX. SLX in the gi is tough to deal with because the grips make it much stronger. It’s easier to finish straight ankles and to get to the back with SLX in the gi.

  2. However, by taking his leg away, he’s giving me an avenue up. So, we’re going to continue to pull down on the collar, but we’re going to punch the leg up and start to get up, cutting around the corner to take him all the way down.
