Side Control Darce Setup

  1. Controlling from side control, we cannot let their frame in on our hip side. If they get that frame in, we need to be proactive and address it immediately. As an overview, there are three ways to address this frame.

Option 1 is to walk our hips back into their hips, so we can then get side control again. There’s nothing necessarily wrong with this, except we took 1 step back and 1 step forward. Nothing was really gained.

Option 2 is to walk over the arm to north/south. Again, nothing is necessarily wrong with this, except it’s more of a lateral move. Again, nothing was really gained.

Option 3 is what we’re going to do, which is dig out the elbow.

  2. We’re going to drop our hip on the leg side. Use our same side arm to cup the tricep, and drive our knee under the shoulder. From here, if we just transitioned back to our knees, he’d just recover his elbow, and we’d be in the same boat. Instead, we’re going to shelf the elbow on our thigh and pinch it into our hip pocket.

  3. Our objective here is to entirely control the elbow. If we were to just sit here, he could just move his head away and recover his elbow. To stop this, we’re going to wrap the head with our arm. We go under the arm, then toward the far side of the head, and then around the head. Finally, once we wrap the arm, we’ll sit our hip down and step our leg closest to the head, up so that we block the arm from coming out above his head. We’ll stop here for now.

Transitioning and Finishing

  1. From this position, to transition and finish, we’re going to drive our hips toward the head and step over the head. From here, I swim my far arm to the other side of his body. My entire objective here is to keep his elbow collapsed. We’ll circle around to gather the arm.

  2. We’ll lock in the darce. Make sure you drive your knee into the sternum. Keep the elbow compressed. Squeeze and drop your chest to finish. Push off of your toes.
